What makes us: Cultural Nomads and Fragmented identities
The experience of being a migrant obscures the individual, flattening into a system of metrics and classification. As travelers, students, or passengers, a small booklet with a snapshot leveled with numeral figures represents who we are and where we belong. Identity becomes codified—a quantifiable, invariable data—imprinted physically and cognitively, keeping us within borders. A common but complex question on where one is ‘from’ arises, and an expected response derived long from these given booklets will exhale without a second thought. Reciting your 'nationality' is a moment until a sudden pull, an encounter that your response denotes far greater than a label.
Nationality brings moments of comfort and security but also internal provocation of cultural misfit when physically afar. Here, we interfere with the written records, conceding the privilege to belong to a category by paper doesn’t guarantee its assimilation. Either alienated from its norms or hesitant from the expectations, this spur of duality encompasses many who are far from their ancestral homelands, eager to pave their pathways as cultural nomads. Bringing themes of diaspora, urbanity, and transculturalism, From Afar gathers emerging artists worldwide from New York City, Sydney, and Melbourne, where physical distance doesn’t prevent them from finding their roots. We invite audiences to reconcile one's identity beyond what's written, full of hybridity and abstraction. In this space, artists input themselves to emanate and discover through constant practice of reconnection, transmission translated with the visual language of art. Opening a shared spectacle, they bridge fractured identities and blur the line of predefined cultural behaviors and also the pressure to mold themselves into them. Embrace of fragmentation and thus becoming interdisciplinary is what makes each of us as cultural nomads, floating on a raft in an unbounded world.
우리를 만드는 것: 문화적 유목과 결합된 정체성
이주민으로 살아간다는 것은 때때로 한 사람의 존재가 국적과 숫자, 분류와 같은 정보로 단순화되는 경험이기도 하다. 여행자, 학생, 혹은 승객으로서 우리는 얼굴 사진과 숫자가 적힌 작은 책자를 통해 내가 누구인지, 어디에 속하는지를 증명한다. 그렇게 정체성은 하나의 고정된 정보가 되어 우리를 규정하고, 국경 안에 위치시킨다. “어디에서 왔나요? (Where are you from?)”라는 익숙한 질문에 우리는 여권에 적힌 국적을 자연스럽게 답하겠지만, 고향에서 멀어질수록 그 짧은 대답은 단순한 라벨 이상의 의미를 갖게 된다. 국적은 우리에게 소속감과 안정감을 주는 동시에, 내가 정말 그 문화에 속해 있는지, 그리고 그 문화가 기대하는 모습과 나는 얼마나 닮아 있는지를 끊임없이 묻게 한다.
이 지점에서 우리는 서류에 기록된 정체성에 질문을 던진다. 서류상 어떤 문화에 속한다고 해서 그 문화에 완전히 동화되는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 익숙한 문화에서 멀어졌다는 낯섦과 그 문화에 맞춰야 한다는 부담 사이에서, 우리는 주어진 정체성을 그대로 받아들이기보다 자신만의 방식으로 새로운 길을 만들고, 서로 다른 문화 사이를 오가며 자신의 정체성을 스스로 만들어간다. 이 전시는 이러한 우리를 ‘문화적 유목민(Cultural Nomads)’이라 부르고자 한다.
『멀리서 본 우리』는 디아스포라, 도시성, 초문화주의(transculturalism)를 바탕으로 뉴욕, 시드니, 멜버른 등 세계 각지에서 활동하는 신진 작가들의 작업을 한자리에 모은 전시이다. 작가들에게 물리적인 거리는 자신의 뿌리를 찾는 데 걸림돌이 되지 않는다는 생각에서 출발한다. 오히려 멀리 떨어져 있기에 자신의 뿌리와 정체성을 새로운 시선으로 바라보고, 서로 다른 문화와 다시 연결될 수 있다. 이러한 경험과 이야기를 예술로 표현하는 동시에, 자신이 어디에서 왔고 누구인지 끊임없이 질문하며 자신만의 정체성을 찾아간다.
관객 역시 서로 다른 문화 속에서 형성된 자신의 모습을 돌아보고, 하나의 기준으로 규정할 수 없는 우리의 정체성을 있는 그대로 바라보고 받아들이는 시간을 가질 수 있기를 바란다.
결국 우리가 가진 정체성은 하나의 모습으로 정해져 있지 않다. 여러 문화와 경험이 만나고 부딪히면서 때로는 나뉘고, 다시 연결되며 끊임없이 변화한다. 우리가 원해서 선택한 것이 아닌 문화적 규범과 기대에 맞춰 살아가야 할 때도 있지만, 그 틀에서 벗어나 자신만의 방식을 찾아갈 수도 있다. 서로 다른 문화와 경험이 섞여 있는 우리의 모습을 있는 그대로 받아들이고, 그 안에서 새로운 연결을 만들어가는 것. 어쩌면 그것이야말로 경계 없는 세상에서 살아가는 문화적 유목민으로서 우리를 앞으로 나아가게 하는 힘일 것이다.
